Symbolism & literature

Following in the footsteps of gloomy Romantic literature, the fin de siècle was marked by a taste for twilight and nocturnal scenes shrouded in darkness – evocative scenes, whose true meaning cannot be understood by reason, but only by the heart and the emotions. The nocturnal gloom veils all contours, hinting at metamorphosis and revealing an inert world of poetry, sleep, dreams, the subconscious, desires, dark urges, and death.
